The dedicatory epistle is signed 'P. Darmancour', i.e. Perrault d'Armancourt, son of Charles Perrault. It is in fact written by Charles Perrault himself. The engraved frontispiece is captioned 'Contes De Ma Mere Loye'. First published in Paris in 1697, Charles Perrault's tales of Mother Goose, adaptations of folk-tales written to amuse his children, achieved immediate and lasting popularity for their unaffected style. This edition contains nine tales, all but the last illustrated with an engraved head-piece.
