Anne Dacier's prose translation of the Iliad first appeared in 1711. The engraved frontispieces are included in the register. The engravings are unsigned. 'Mme Dacier had a very considerable role in the diffusion of knowledge about classical works, and her activity may be regarded as a late phase of the work of the Renaissance humanists, for her aim was always to explicate the texts and facilitate access to them' (see K.M. Wilson, An Encyclopedia of Continental Women Writers, London 1991, p. 288). Her editions of the Iliad and the Odyssey towards the end of her life were issued as contributions in the 'Battle of the Books' in France and held their own alongside works by Fénelon and others in the wider literary debate. She was one of the editors of the series 'In usum serenissimi Delphi' along with Pierre Daniel Huet (1630--1721).
