Second issue of the first edition published in the same year, with a cancel title-page (see Wing), the original edition having pagination: [4], 96, 95-690 p. Includes two lists of subscribers, the 'five-guinea' subscribers earning a dedication on one of the 'cuts of Virgil', which are reused from the folio editions of John Ogilby's Virgil with new dedication lines. Frontispiece signed by Michael vander Gucht. Most plates engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar or Pierre Lombart, from drawings by Franz Cleyn. Dryden was assisted by William Congreve in checking the translation of the Aeneid against the Latin original and in negotiating the contract with Tonson which was signed on 15 June 1694. The translation was a great success for the vigour of the poetry, and highly regarded in England and abroad. ESTC r26296; Wing 616.

Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone for 12s., 17 October 1808. (Spiers Box). Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper 18/- (apparently not Boone's hand). Pencil code t/2 on front pastedown, formerly a free-endpaper with earlier ownership inscription visible on the reverse of Tho: Sands [or Bando?] Jul: 7. 1730 [or 1750].

Binding C18th mottled calf, blind double-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine compartments, red morocco spine-label.
