Savary des Brûlons was appointed inspector general of the Customs House in Paris in 1686. His Dictionnaire universel de commerce was completed posthumously by his brother Philémon Louis Savary and published in 1723, with a supplement appearing in 1730. The first edition of the English translation appeared in weekly installments, 1751--55. Posthlethwayt's third edition was preceded by a subscribers' 'Prospectus' dated November 1765. Includes two preliminary discourses on British commerce and commercial union between Great Britain and British America in vol. I, pp. xi--lxvii. With a frontispiece engraved by C. Mosley, vignettes by I. Basire and maps by R.W. Seale, E. Bowen, Tho. Kitchin and others after the Sieur d'Anville 'improved by Mr. Bolton'. Unpaginated after the preliminaries in each volume.
