BRITTON, John (1771--1857)
Picturesque antiquities of the English cities. Illustrated by a series of engravings of antient buildings, street scenery, etc. with historical and descriptive accounts of each subject. By John Britton, ...

It was expensive to produce, nearly £3000, it could not compete with cheaper publications of the period, and Britton failed to recoup his outlay through sales. In 1835 he described it as 'the most losing speculation [he] ever embarked in'. BAL, Early printed books, no. 427.
