It was expensive to produce, nearly £3000, it could not compete with cheaper publications of the period, and Britton failed to recoup his outlay through sales. In 1835 he described it as 'the most losing speculation [he] ever embarked in'. BAL, Early printed books, no. 427.

Copy Notes Large paper copy (?) with a full set of proof plates on India paper and another set of 59 proofs before letters (lacking the plate of the West Gate and Bridge, Gloucester). A presentation copy accompanied by a letter from the author dated 8 October 1830 stating that Of this edition only 10 copies are work'd, & this copy I have pick'd out for you. It is certainly the most beautiful volume I have ever published; & for typography & embellishment will vie with any thing in English, or foreign literature.

Binding C19th half maroon straight-grain morocco, orange paper boards with matching endpapers. The printed label of 'Hutchinson Bookbinder' on the back paste-down.
