Issued in parts between May 1814 and March 1815. This is the first volume of what was to become the Cathedral antiquities of England series. The plates are numbered in two series, I--XXVI and 1--4, V, with pl. 15 intended to be bound as the frontispiece. BAL, Early printed books, no. 407.

Copy Notes Soane purchased numbers 1 and 2 'Proofs & Etchings at 40s' from Britton for £4 on 16 November 1814. (Archive 7/6/55). Numbers 3, 4 and 5 were purchased for £6 in January 1816. (Archive 16/12/70). A large paper copy with proof plates and 18 proofs before letters. It is bound (1) with the next two volumes in the series, The history and antiquities of ... Norwich, 1816 (q.v.) and The history and antiquities of ...Winchester, 1817 (q.v.).

Binding C19th half brown goatskin, gilt-ruled borders, gilt double-rule spine direct-lettered in gilt, marbled-paper boards. Bound as vol. [I] '1814--17' of a four-volume set of 'Britton's / Cathedral / Antiquities.'
