PERRAULT,, Charles (1628--1703)
Courses de testes et de bague faittes par le Roy, et par les princes et seigneurs de sa cour, en l'année 1662.
A Paris (Place), de l'Imprimerie Royale,, 1670.
[8], 8 p., 17--61, [1] leaves, 63--67, [1], 65--104 p., [7] pl. (= 11 impressions) : engr. t.-pl., engr. initials, head- & tail-pieces, [85] engr. illus. ; 55.6 cm. (1°)

The title appears in the pedestal of a bust of Louis XIV set fictitiously in front of the place royale du Marais (now the place des Vosges). This edition includes a letterpress half-title (reading 'Covrses / De Testes Et De Bagve, / Faites Par Le Roy, / Et / Par Les Princes Et Seignevrs / De Sa Covr. / En L'Année M. DC. LXII.') and a three-page dedication to the Dauphin signed ' ... [Charles] Perravlt'. Although the tournament itself had been organised by Carlo Vigarani (1613-1713), it was Charles Perrault (Claude's brother) who composed the descriptive text of this celebrated fête-book recording the event. Another edition, containing the same illustrative material but with Perrault's text translated into Latin verse by Esprit Fléchier, was also published in 1670 under the title Festiva ad capita annulumque decursio [&c]. It was under this Latin title that the work was later re-issued without letterpress as one of the 23 volumes of the 1727 edition of the 'Cabinet du Roi' (see BAL, Early printed books, no. 518.K).

Although nearly all unsigned, the fine illustrations for which this work is much admired were drawn and engraved by François Chauveau (costumes and devices), Israel Silvestre (double-page views) and Gilles Rousselet (title-plate). Pages 67--104 (sig. Ooo--Kkkk1) containing 'Circvs Regivs, Sive Pompa Eqvestris Lvdovici XIV. Carmen Heroicvm' by Fléchier are integral to this edition, cf. copies at Royal Academy of Arts and All Soul's College, Oxford.
