Issued in 12 numbers which appeared at two monthly intervals, each containing 8 plates, added to which were two full-size, un-numbered plates (called 'vignettes') at the beginning and end of the collection and a final map of Linton's route.

Copy Notes Soane's copy is of India proofs. On the front paste-down is a [4] page printed announcement of the ninth number, dated June 1832 (q.v.) which is inscribed in ink on the final page The Remaining Notices are upon the / inside of Cover of Mrs Hofland's poetry, i.e. Barbara Hofland, Poetical illustrations ..., 1832 (q.v.). Linton had written to Soane on 29 March 1833 enclosing a copy of the Poetical illustrations and presumably the advertisement described above, as an inducement to subscribe to the Sketches in Italy. The ALs from Linton includes a copy of Soane's reply dated 10 April, requesting the sight of the work when completed. (Priv. Corr. I.L.13).
