Lugt 13878. Granger's Biographical history of England was first published in 1769 and augmented several times. The fifth edition (edited by James Caulfield) appeared in 1824 'with upward of four hundred additional lives'. The letterpress was supplied with blank leaves for extra-illustration (or "grangerizing") to the purchaser's taste. Several illustrious collections of such portraits appeared at the auction houses in the 1820s and 1830s.
