A successful book of "characters" - pen portraits of social or moral types in the spirit of Theophrastus or La Bruyère which achieved great popularity in the seventeenth century - which went through numerous editions. Includes a 'Chronological List Of Books Of Characters', from 1567 to 1700, pp. 246--314.

Binding C19th calf, blind-panelled covers, blind-tooled spine compartments, gilt-lettered spine-title, gilt edges.
