Anonymous. By Jacques Esprit. First edition in an anonymous English translation of the author's La fausseté des vertus humaines, 1678. The translation by William Beauvoir was published as Discourses on the deceitfulness of humane virtues ... To which is added, the Duke de la Rochefoucaut's moral reflections, in 1706. With a preliminary license to print leaf reading on A1v: 'Licensed, Febr. 27. 1691. Rob. Midgley.' ESTC r3094.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front pastedown with price 6d and a reference to p. 112, and on front free-endpaper with prices 1:6 and 1s-0. Bookseller's code on rear pastedown.

Binding C17th mottled calf, blind-ruled borders and spine, covers blind-tooled parallel to spine, gilt-ruled spine, later red spine-label and spine date.
