Edited by John Laurens Bicknell. Bicknell, of Crooms Hill, Greenwich, was Soane's private solicitor and a personal friend. He is not to be confused with his father, J.L. Bicknell, senior (1740--1787) who had perpetrated Joel Collier's Musical Travels (q.v.).

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper John Soane Esq.- / Whose taste and science / have enriched his / country with architectural / treasures. / with every respect / from the author of the / notes and editor of / this book. / JB. With an ALs from Bicknell dated May 29, 1826 from 34 Sackville Street folded and tipped onto the front free-endpaper concerning barristers' criticism of our beautiful new Law Courts, and proposing to dedicate an edition of Josephus to him, which I hope, ... will be ready for the press by the ensuing spring, ... in order that I may express, publickly, the sense of one lawyer upon merits which ought to be the admiration of all ... The letter is transcribed in full in A.T. Bolton, The portrait of Sir John Soane (London 1927) p. 449. In the event the edition of Josephus never appeared. [N.b. Bolton confuses Soane's friend Bicknell with his father, J.L. Bicknell, senior.]
