John Millington, civil engineer but qualified also in the law and medicine (lecturing at Guy's Hospital) settled in Philadelphia where he opened a scientific instrument business; in 1835 he became a professor at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, later moving to the newly founded University of Mississippi in 1848.
