AQUILA, Francesco Faraone (c. 1676--c. 1740)
[Stylobates columnae Antoninae. 1708. Another issue]
Stylobates columnae Antoninae nvper e rvder ibvs campi Martii jvssv SS. D. N. Clementis. XI. effossvs in tres tabvlas distribvtvs.
Romæ:, cura, et impensis Dominici de Rubeis,, 1708.
engr. t.-pl., III pl. ; 34.4 x 47.5 cm. (obl. 2°)

At foot of title-plate imprint: 'Franciscus Aquila opus hoc delineauit, et incidit'. The three plates depicting the base of the Columna Antonini Pii appear in some but not all copies of the second edition of Pietro Santi Bartoli's Columna Antoniniana, which was issued with the title Columna Cochlis M. Aurelio Antonino Augusto ... in 1704 (q.v.). The tablets shown include an inscription; the apotheosis of Antoninus Pius; and a Roman funeral. The base of the column from which these are drawn is today in the Cortile delle Pigna in the Vatican Museums complex. Subsequently the title-plate as above was added, dated 1708, and used both for a separate issue of the present plates, and apparently as a title-plate for a reissue of the whole collection as in the British Library copy, shelfmark 1707.a.6. (See BAL, Early printed books, no. 213.) Here the four plates are bound at the end of the larger work, in a later binding. Another issue of the same year exists with slightly varying plates and a letterpress dedication leaf by D. de' Rossi (q.v.); priority of issue unknown, but the numbered plates in the present issue appear plainer and rougher in execution, lacking the ornamental figures at the sides. Berlin Kat. 4207.

Copy Notes Bound (2) with Bartoli's Columna Cochlis M. Aureliio Antonino, 1704 (q.v.) and Colonna Traiana, [1673] (q.v.).

Binding Later C18th sprinkled calf, triple gilt-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine, red spine-label, gilt-lettered 'Colonne/ Di/ Roma'. The endleaves watermarked 'D & C BLAUW'.

Reference Number 6429

Additional Names ROSSI, Domenico de' (fl. 1693--1721); Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome (121--180); Aquila, Francesco Faraone (c.$1767--c.$1740)
