[24], 48, 47--'981' [i.e. 198], 193--368 p., [2] pl. ; 15.9 cm. (8º)

A continuation of The English rogue described, a picaresque narrative by Richard Head based on his own early life, first published in 1665 by Henry Marsh and reissued at least four times after his death by Francis Kirkman who acquired the rights (1772 ed., q.v.). Having unsuccessfully pressed Head to write a continuation, Kirkman supplied the text of the second part himself; this is the first extant edition. Parts 3 and 4 were first published in the same year; although Head continued to deny his authorship of the continuations, in all likelihood there was collaboration. Despite the pagination, the register and text are continuous. This is the variant with p. 198 misnumbered '981'. ESTC r4699.

Copy Notes The Soane copy is part of a uniformly bound mixed set, with the 1682 edition of part 1 (q.v.), the 1674 edition of part 3 (q.v.) and the 1680 edition of part 4 (q.v.). Heavily cropped with loss of the foot of both plates.

Binding C19th russia, blind-tooled borders and corner-pieces, blind-tooled spine compartments, gilt-ruled spines, gilt-lettered, marbled edges to match the endpapers. Bound four parts as a set.
