Swiss by birth, Burckhardt travelled extensively in the Middle East, Arabia, Nubia (modern Sudan) and Egypt under the auspices of the African Association. After his untimely death in Cairo in 1817 his travel books were posthumously edited and published by the African Association. The frontispiece portrait of the author is etched by Angelica Clarke from the original painting by Slater; the maps are engraved by J. Walker.
