First published in 1779. Moore, a physician, accompanied Douglas, 8th Duke of Hamilton on a four-year grand tour through France, Switzerland, Germany, Bohemia and Austria, relating, in epistolary form, his visits to Voltaire at Ferney and Frederick the Great in Berlin. Moore’s son, the future hero of Corunna Sir John Moore, also made the journey. This immensely popular work went through twenty-one editions in Moore's lifetime.
