Chastellux came to America in 1780, where he served with honour for three years as Major-General with the French troops under the Comte de Rochambeau. He developed friendships and acquaintances with many officers in the victorious revolutionary army, and during his tour, visited Washington, La Fayette and Jefferson. His narrative is an early record of life in the newly United States, and one of the most notable acounts of the American Revolutionary period. It originally appeared anonymously in 1781 in Newport, Rhode Island as Voyage de Newport à Philadephie [sic], Albany, &c., in an edition of only 24 to 27 copies. Several surreptitious editions followed, but this first authorized and enlarged edition was not published until 1786. Errata to both volumes at the end of the text of vol. II. The three plates in vol. II show views of a 'natural bridge' in Virginia.
