Forms nos. XXVIII--XXX of Murray's (later Tegg's) 'Family Library'. Edited by 'A.B.B.', i.e. Lieutenant A.B. Becher who signs the introduction. Final leaf of advertisements in vol. II. Richard Lander had been the sole survivor of Hugh Clapperton's second expedition into the interior of Africa in 1827. Under instruction from the Government, he and his brother John undertook this journey to the Niger in 1830--31 and were rewarded with the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society and one thousand guineas from John Murray.
