ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques (1712--1778)
La botanique de J.J. Rousseau, ornée de soixante-cinq planches, imprimées en couleurs d'après les peintures de P.J. Redouté.
Paris: Delachaussée; Garnery. [De l'imprimerie de L.E. Herhan], XIV.=1805.
VIII, [2], 124 p., 65 col. pl. ; 50.8 cm. (2º)

Title-page leaf vignette. Printer's statement from half-title verso. Text comprises the 'Lettres Élémentaires Sur La Botanique' (first published posthumously in 1782), with the 'Explication Des Planches' and 'Fragments Pour Un Dictionnaire Des Termes D'Usage En Botanique'. Another issue published in the same year had the plates printed in black.

Copy Notes Probably the copy of 'Rousseaus Botany' bought from J. Williams on 23 April 1832 for £2 12s. 6d. (Spiers Box, loose bills). A copy of 'La Botanique de Rousseau, Folio, ornée de 65 Planches / imprimées en couleurs' is included in a handwritten list of books, mainly French, which is undated but water-marked 1812, with the price of 18 guineas added in pencil. (Spiers Box.). However, it is not clear that this list refers to books purchased by Soane as many of the works are not preserved in the Soane Museum, and the provenance of others is known from other evidence in Soane's Archive.

Binding C19th green straight-grained morocco with neoclassical gilt- and blind-tooled panels and borders incorporating palmette and anthemion and foliate ornaments, gilt-tooled spine, gilt edges, marbled endpapers.

Reference Number 612
