Volume II is dated 1795, vol. III, 1797. Includes the works in Latin and Greek. Boydell was already engaged in publishing The dramatic works of Shakspeare, issued in parts between 1791 and 1802 (q.v.). For this edition Boydell commissioned George Romney to design a portrait plate of Milton and his daughters, and Richard Westall to design illustrations to each book of Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained as well as the more famous individual poems, mostly stipple-engraved by Earlom, Kirk, Ogborne, Schiavonetti, B. Smith, and other leading engravers of the period. ESTC t135450.

Copy Notes Armorial bookplate of Henry Crabb. Inscription in ink on front free-endpapers of volumes I and III: Memm: These Volumes all much disfigured and / spotted with damp: especially the Copper Plates previous to 1837. GB., i.e. George Bailey, first curator of Sir John Soane's Museum.

Binding Full C19th blue straight-grained morocco, with elaborate gilt-tooled palmette and anthemion borders, thick-thin gilt-ruled spines, gilt-ruled spines, gilt- and blind-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges.
