With a general half-title leaf in the first volume (vol. XV) reading: The works of Dean Swift volumes XV, XVI, XVII, which with six volumes of literary correspondence, complete this collection. For a full bibliographical description and overview of the so-called Hawkesworth editions of the works of Swift issued in quarto, large octavo, small octavo and 18mo formats between 1754-5 and 1779, see H. Teerink and Arthur H. Scouten, A bibliography of the writings of Jonathan Swift, 2nd ed. (Philadelphia 1963), pp. 80-83 and table, p. 104. The Soane set is the large octavo edition, the first 14 volumes of which were reprinted in 1768 (q.v.), and comprising also six volumes of Letters, 1768--9 (q.v.; q.v.) and a two-volume Supplement, 1776--9 (q.v.). The present catalogue entry describes volumes XV--XVII as issued in 1775 to accompany both large octavo editions. The first two of these volumes were first published in 1765 and are here reprinted to accompany the first edition of vol. XVII (see Teerink-Scouten p. 94; apparently not recorded in ESTC). Volume XVI omits the name of L. Davis in the imprint; vol. XVII additionally names W. Bowyer and J. Nichols at the start, and E. Johnston at the end. Volume XVII has a half-title reading 'An Additional Volume To Dr. Swift's Works, Being The Seventeenth; Which, With Six Volumes Of Literary Correspondence, Complete This Collection.', and on the verso recording the completion of the collection at this date (1775) in 13 volumes quarto, 23 volumes large octavo, and 24 volumes small octavo and 18mo. In this volume, pages [551-2] are a folded letterpress genealogical table, and leaf Tt7 (pp. 645-6) is slit as for cancellation (see Teerink-Scouten p. 90). Copy Notes Bound as volumes XV--XVII in a collected set of the large octavo edition in 25 volumes.

Binding C18th tree calf, gilt roll-tooled borders to the covers, gilt-tooled spine, red and green morocco spine-labels lettered in gilt 'Swift's Works.' and 'Vol: XV. (- XVII.)'.
