A collection edited by E.A. Philippe de Prétot, mostly of short novels and novellas but also including some pieces in verse, first published in the Hague by Jean Néaulme in 1735--52. Title and imprint taken from the engraved title-plates; the Soane copy retains letterpress title-pages having the Amsterdam imprint of Marc-Michel Rey dated 1762--81 in volumes III, V, VII, VIII, X--XII. Each volume has an engraved frontispiece by G. Boily after Benjamin Samuel Bolomey. Pagination is slightly irregular. The contents include 'La Boucle De Cheveux Enlevée', a French translation by P.F. Guyot Desfontaines of Pope's 'The Rape of the Lock' in vol. I; Count Anthony Hamilton's 'Mémoires du Comte de Grammont' (first published in 1713) in vols IV and V, and his tales 'Le Bélier' and 'Les Quatre Facardins' (first published in 1730) in vols VI and VII respectively; Madame de Lafayette's 'La Princesse de Cleves' (first published in 1678) in vols V and VI; Crébillon fils's 'Les Égaremens du Coeur et de l'Esprit' in vol. XI (first published 1736). Publisher's 'Catalogue' on the final page of vol. III.

Copy Notes Lacking the letterpress titles in volumes I--II, VI, and IX. Inscribed in ink on first free-endpaper of vol. I John Soane / 1803 / 1:18:0 and by bookseller in pencil 12 vol.

Binding C18th tree calf, gilt-ruled spines with dove and garland tool in compartments, black and dark green morocco spine-labels.
