Volumes I--II consist of memoirs 'dicté au Général Gourgaud', the Emperor's aide-de-camp; vols III--IV of memoirs 'dicté au Comte de Montholon'; volumes [V--VII] comprise 'Mélanges Historiques', tomes I--III, also compiled by the Comte de Montholon. Volume IV is dated 1824. Gourgaud entered the French army in 1802 and Montholon in 1798 and by the end of the war they were among the handful of generals whom Napoleon trusted above all others. They accompanied him to Elba during the first abdication, and following Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo they remained at his side and joined him in exile. These recollections of life with Napoleon on St. Helena provide vital information about the Emperor's later years.

Copy Notes Imperfect; only volumes I--II (the memoirs dictated to Gourgaud) and [V--VI] (tomes I--II of the 'Mélanges ...'), presumably the first to be issued, are in Soane's library. Bills for the purchase of 'Memoires de Napoleon 2 toms 8vo' from T. & W. Boone for £1 2s. on 30 December 1822 (Spiers Box), and of 'Memoirs de Napoleon tom 3 & 4 - 8' for £1 2s. on 18 June 1823 (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.5.5) probably relate to Soane's acquisition of the present work.

Binding Later C19th half calf, blind roll-tooled borders, marbled-paper boards, thick-thin gilt-ruled spine, green and dark blue morocco spine-labels.
