First published in 1774. 'The following Natural History is written, with only such an attention to system as serves to remove the reader's embarrassments, and allure him to proceed.' -- Preface, p. ix. Dr. Johnson's epitaph to the memory of Oliver Goldsmith as a poet, naturalist and historian in Westminster Abbey affirms natural history's importance in the canon of his friend's works. Each volume has separate table of contents. The plate of 'A Volcano' opposite p. 87 in vol. I is marked 'Vol. II', but is in its correct location. ESTC t146099.

Copy Notes 'Goldsmith 8 Vols' bought from Thomas Boone for £2 8s., 24 April 1806. (Spiers Box). With Boone's price and hieroglyphs inscribed in pencil on vol. I front free-endpaper.

Binding Late C18th tree calf, gilt-tooled spines with Greek key, vase and garland motifs, red and black morocco spine-labels.
