III reads: Printed: and sold by G. Strahan. W. Mears. And J. Stagg. The first edition of one of Defoe's most consistently respected works, written as a series of letters describing journeys through various parts of England and Wales (vols I & II) and northern England and Scotland (vol. III). Volume I is in three parts (the first three letters), vol. II in two parts (each containing two letters), and vol. III in two parts (containing two and three letters respectively); each part has separate pagination and register. Includes maps by Herman Moll of the Siege of Colchester in vol. I, of England and Wales in vol. II and of Scotland in vol. III. With publisher's advertisements for books printed for W. Mears facing title-page in vol. II, and on final five pages of vol. III. The indexes to the first two volumes are in vol. II. ESTC t71278; Moore A59; Furbank and Owens 220, 223, 230.

Copy Notes The Soane copy has the vol. I index to vol. I bound after the preface in vol. I, and the vol. II index in the same location in vol. II. Page 125 (second sequence) of vol. I has the text altered in ink from 'the Lord Powis's [dwelling] at Peckham' to Trevors, and marginal note Trevor[s] / house (cropped at the fore-edge). Bound as three volumes of a uniformly bound 48-volume set of works by or attributed to Defoe which on the evidence of endleaves variously watermarked '1814', '1808', etc. was presumably assembled around 1810--15.

Binding C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt-tooled spine direct-lettered in gilt 'Defoe's Works' and 'Tour Through Gt Britain Vol. I (--III)'.
