Roscoe began publishing this book, the principal work in the author's long history of historical writings, at his own expense in 1793, with the first edition produced in February of 1796 (though marked as Liverpool, 1795). This work drew great attention both in England and abroad, and went into many subsequent editions. Included in each volume is a separately paginated appendix of documents in the original Italian and Latin and a number of poems in Italian, that in vol. II having divisional title: 'Poesie Del Magnifico Lorenzo De' Medici, Tratte da Testi a Penna Della Libreria Mediceo-Laurenziana, e Finora Inedite'. Index at the end of vol. II. ESTC t110926.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the half-title in vol. II. Bought from Mr. Besley for £2 2s. on 21 October 1796. (SNB).

Binding C19th marbled calf, gilt roll-tooled borders, gilt tooled spine with wreathed mandorla ornaments, black morocco spine-label. Two volumes bound in one. Bound by J. Wingrave for 7s., 31 August 1804. (Archives 7/3/56; entry in Spiers Box. Misc. Booksellers dated 15 September 1804).
