Although he is chiefly now remembered for his works of fiction, Smollett's History became a standard reference during the second half of the eighteenth century. Engraved frontispieces after Francis Hayman by Charles Grignion (vol. I), after Hayman by J. Miller (vol. II), by Miller (vols III--IV); the map is by Thomas Kitchin. Errata on recto of final leaf of vols I and II. Volume III includes a leaf inserted after the title-page (sig. 4B) with an explanation of the plates. ESTC t55301.

Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone for 18s., 24 November 1808. (Spiers Box). With Boone's codes and pencil notes neat Sett / 4 vs. £0=18s=0d on vol. I front free-endpaper. Volume III inscribed in ink on the front free-endpaper my (repeated) and Monson with numbers 123456. Some marginal pencil corrections.

Binding C18th mottled calf, gilt thin roll-tooled spine, tan morocco spine-labels.
