As a Jesuit priest Charlevoix had travelled widely in the French colonies in North America; his Histoire ... de la Nouvelle France draws both on his experience and on historical research. The work was issued simultaneously in quarto (three-volume) and duodecimo (six-volume) editions, each in five issues with the imprints of five different Parisian printers, lavishly illustrated with maps by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin and botanical plates. (vol. III, pp. i--xix). With 'Projet D'Un Corps D'Histoires Du Nouveau Monde' with 'Fastes Chronologiques Du Nouveau Monde, Et Des Etablissemens Que Les Européens Y Ont Faits: Corrigés Et Augmentés' and final privilege leaf dated 8 May 1741 (pp. i--lxi, [3]) inserted between pp. viii and ix of vol. I in the Soane copy, but found at the front of vol. II in most copies. The 'Projet' was first published in January 1735 in the Journal de Trévoux of which Charlevoix was at the time an editor, and was also reprinted in his Histoire et description générale du Japon, 1736. Title-page vignettes with motto 'In Tenui Labor' after H. Humblot; head pieces by Humblot and J.P. Fournier; maps engraved by Dheulland. Includes indexes.
