Notes

Soane was in the office of Henry Holland when he made these drawings and thus properly, they belong to Holland. However, they are in Soane's hand and the simple, geometrical design could well be his since he was to do something similar, though more evolved, in his design for a cow barn at Burn Hall in 1783 (q.v.). The twin, seven-bay fronts have small, high lunette windows between Tuscan pilasters and are stopped at right and left by a slightly raised and projecting pavilion with a high round arch and a square hipped roof. From the outside, the farm yards and their buildings would present neatly symmetrical fronts though once in the yard the differing needs of the livestock would become very apparent.

See also (in Sketchbooks catalogue): a sketchbook labelled 'Miscellaneous / Sketches / 1777' SM volume 38, pp.1-6) for rough details in Henry Holland's hand for the library, drawing room, dressing room, staircase and hall of Cadland.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
