Purpose

Lieutenant-General Francis Lascelles: design for a silver cup, 1764 (2)

Signed and dated

  • 1764

Notes

Francis Lascelles (1744-99) was the son of the Caribbean sugar merchant Edward Lascelles (1702-47), and therefore, the cousin of Edwin Lascelles (1712-95), the builder of Harewood House. Francis was an army officer, attaining the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1793. At some time he was also made a Groom of the Bedchamber to King George III, and died unmarried in 1799.

Nothing is known of the silver cup designed for Lt-General Lascelles in 1764. It appears to be a racing cup, but it is not known if it was executed. Moreover, this design is omitted from the relevant literature on the subject of silver.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
