Record drawings for friezes, n.d. (3)

Notes

Though it is impossible to date these drawings it is clear that while a lot of the friezes from Harewood are represented it does not record them all. It would appear that this volume is not a catalogue of all of Adam's executed friezes, but rather a collection of the designs that the brothers considered to be their best. See appendix on volume 53.

(Adam volumes 53/31, 53/32) The two friezes for Edwin Lascelles's bed chamber are both labelled as being for a dressing room, but each corresponds to one of the two alternative laid out wall elevations for the bed chamber (Adam volumes 35/17 and 35/19). The friezes for Edwin, and Mrs Lascelles's dressing rooms (Adam volumes 53/33 and 53/32 respectively) each correspond with the laid out wall elevations for those rooms (Adam volumes 35/20 and 35/21).

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
