[8] Preliminary design for the rear front of a hospital chapel, c1778, unexecucted

Aspect

Elevation of a two-storey, five-bay building with a pyramidal roof and a steeple surmounted by a stepped, ribbed dome supporting a weather vane. The pedimented central three bays are projecting. At the ground-storey level there is a central stepped entrance flanked by half-height windows. At the first storey level there are string courses, and there is a central semi-circular-headed window flanked by full-height windows and roundels. Above this there is a tablet inscribed EMMANUEL HOSPITAL, and there is an oculus set within the tympanum. The central three-bays are flanked by single bays with half-height windows at the ground-storey level. At the first-storey level there are semi-circular-headed windows. On the right-hand side of the building there are piers bearing lanterns, with a wrought iron gateway set in between

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
