[5] Unfinished drawing for the north front of a house, c1770, unexecuted

Aspect

Elevation of the north front of a two-storey, five-bay building, with a hipped roof, a part-sunken basement, and a Corinthian colonnade. On the basement storey there are Diocletian windows, with a band of Vitruvian scroll above, and on the raised ground storey there is a central entrance accessed via a balustraded, flared staircase. The central entrance is flanked by balustraded, full-height windows, and balustraded, Venetian windows. On the first storey there are half-height windows, and the building has a frieze of fluting and rosette roundels, with a band of dentils above. The central building is flanked by one-and-a-half-storey, balustraded link blocks, with half-height windows on the ground storey, and three-quarter-height windows on the first storey, with bands of Vitruvian scroll and string courses set in between. The link blocks connect to one-and-a-half-storey, three-bay, pedimented pavilions, surmounted by acroteria, and the pavilion to the east supports statuary. On the ground storey the pavilions contain half-height windows, with bands of Vitruvian scroll above. On the first storey the pavilions contain full-height, balustraded windows, and there are friezes of fluting and rosettes

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
